The Reform Club built in 1887 is a refurbishment and extension of a prominent locally listed building in the Heaton Moor conservation area consisting of 33 apartments. 12 of the apartments in the original building are for outright sale and the 21 nr. 2 bedroom apartments for shared ownership are situated in the extended newbuild block to the rear.

The shared ownership apartments received funding via the Homes and Communities Agency and comply with Lifetime Homes standard, Design and Quality standards and achieve level 3 on the Code for Sustainable Homes.

Important design elements are the creation of two access atria containing lifts and staircases and bringing light into the centre of the development. The eclectic facade of the original building was fully refurbished. The existing roof structure and finish were replaced due to previous fire damage and a new steel structure introduced to maximise the use of the large internal volume with the new roof slope, height, detailing and finishes all matching the original. The extension, which is of contemporary style, with a glazed link between old and new, respects the appearance of the original building.

When Contour Homes, part of the Symphony Housing Group were brought an opportunity to be involved in The Reform Club they were delighted to be working in partnership with TADW Architects. As this much loved building was situated within a conservation area and surrounded by a mix of properties, the project had to be unique and attractive which was achieved by the excellence of the TADW architectural design. The scheme was a mix of shared ownership and outright sale apartments and provided an innovative approach to a mixed tenure building by using existing and new construction. The scheme was extremely popular with local residents especially and interest was registered from when the scheme started on site which finished with all the shared ownership apartments being reserved before completion. The Reform Club is a wonderful scheme that has been well received by Contour Homes, Contour Property Services and all of the current residents and should be noted as a success for all those involved.”
