Spring Street

Project location: Rishton, Lancashire
Client: Watson Construction Limited and Onward Homes
Contractor: Watson Construction Limited
Type: Residential, Regeneration
Amount: 59 homes

Context

The Bridgefield and Britannia Mill buildings formerly stood on the site, with terraced housing previously fronting Spring Street.  These had been constructed along the Leeds and Liverpool canal during the 19th Century and the site cleared of all structures, save for an electric sub station and boundary wall at some stage over the 15 years preceeding the development.

Hyndburn council were keen that the new development should incorporate the canal in an active way, rather than closing it off as other nearby recent schemes had done

Design

This principal was followed from early design stage and has resulted in 3 rows of terraced housing fronting toward the canal, along with an apartment building whose rear elevation is open towards the canal.

A somewhat traditional design approach was taken to the scheme which sits comfortably in its context and is intended to compliment it without being a carbon copy of existing terracing.  Feature gable elevations are provided to add interest to the terraced rows along the canal and their canalside elevation incorporates stone heads and cills.
