Context
The site was formerly a railway cutting which linked a branch of the Liverpool to Manchester rail line to the Hope Valley Line. Both lines remain in use, however the linking track across the site was long since removed. TADW Architects identified the development potential of the site and worked with Stockport Homes and The Casey Group to develop proposals to deliver 60 homes at the site.
These proposals were developed with input from Stockport MBC, who had earmarked the site as a key location in their aspiration to deliver a tram / train link between Stockport and Marple. Early discussions with AECOM established a feasible route for a tram train link through the site and thus identified the developable area.
Extensive engineered filling operations at the site enabled the 6m deep cutting to be remediated to provide a relatively level construction site.
Design
The design features contrasting brickwork, shared surfacing and nuances in the layout to create zones along the linear site, imbuing a sense of place for the residents. This included providing two local areas for play on site where the surfacing and housing layout is adjusted at these locations to reinforce that sense of place.
The homes provided include a mixture of 2, 3 and 4 bedroom houses and 2 bedroom apartments across a mixture of tenures.
